Car maintenance tips: How to check your car before a road trip or long holiday

Road trips are fun and much loved by Malaysians, with endless choice of delicious food and great scenery just a couple of hours drive away. However, the fun could very easily turn into a nightmare if your car decides to break down mid-journey.

Here are some car maintenance tips and how to check if your car is working well to fully enjoy the road trip experience!

1. How to check engine oil

Engine oil is the most important part of any vehicle as it helps to reduce friction between components and ensure that everything runs smoothly. You can identify whether your engine oil needs to be changed based on these five warning signs:

  1. Knocking sound from the engine caused by friction between the metal components as a result of dirty or less concentrated engine oil.

  2. Smell of burning petrol or gray/bluish smoke coming out from the exhaust pipe caused by an oil leak or engine overheating.

  3. Darker engine oil colour as compared to the usual brown or transparent caused by dirt and debris from internal combustion of the engine. This is usually the simplest indicator and can be identified with a simple dipstick oil check.

How to check engine oil level:

  • Remove the dipstick and clean it from any oil particles
  • Re-insert the dipstick into the engine oil and check the oil level and colour
  • If the oil is above the average level, remove some of the oil so as to not affect the engine performance
  • Clean the dipstick with a tissue and check the oil colour
  • Car engine warning light starts blinking on the dashboard indicating that the car is low on black oil.
  1. Increase in fuel consumption caused by dilution of the engine oil which results in more stress on the engine.

2. How to check coolant level

The coolant is important in keeping the engine running at a safe temperature and prevents overheating. It is important to know how to check the coolant level on a road trip as long drives put a lot of strain on the engine. It is important to know that you should not check the coolant level while the engine is still hot as it may lead to serious burns. Here is how to check your coolant level:

  1. Open the hood of the car and locate the coolant reservoir

  2. The coolant reservoir should have a  L (low) and F (full) markings on it

  3. Add more coolant if the fluid is close to the L marking, all the way close to the F marking

  4. Low coolant level or overheating should also be indicated on the dashboard if it happens

3. How to check brake fluid and car brake pad

The brake fluid functions to ensure that your brakes work well. This is especially important to prevent major accidents from occuring. Here is how to check brake fluid levels:

  1. Open the hood of the car and identify the brake cylinder reservoir

  2. Check the fluid level by making sure it is not too low from the ‘full’ line

  3. Fill up the reservoir if brake fluid is low. However, a low brake fluid usually indicates that the brake pads have worn out. It is highly recommended to consult a professional car mechanic for proper maintenance

Here is how to check car brake pad:

  1. You can check the brake pad through the holes in the wheel. Thin-looking brake pads indicate it is time for a replacement

  2. Loud squealing noise when braking may indicate a wear in brake pads

  3. Vibrating in the brake pedal or steering wheel when braking may also indicate worn brake pads

4. How to check power steering fluid

The power steering fluid functions to ensure that the steering wheel is responsive and smooth. You may check the power steering fluid level with the following steps:

  1. Open the hood of the car and locate the power steering fluid reservoir

  2. Identify the fluid level by ensuring it is above the MIN marking but not over the MAX marking

  3. Some vehicles may be equipped with a dipstick instead. Identify the fluid level by inserting the dipstick to check the fluid level

  4. Add power steering fluid up to the appropriate level

5. How to check gearbox oil level

Maintaining the gearbox oil at an optimum level is important to ensure you can switch gears smoothly on the road. Here are steps on how to check your gearbox oil level:

  1. Open the hood and locate the automatic transmission fluid with its dipstick.

  2. Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean

  3. Re-insert the dipstick and remove it

  4. The dipstick should have two ‘Full’ markings - one warm and one cold

  5. Add automatic transmission fluid if the level is below the warm line

6. How to check car tires

The car tires are the main contact points with the road and should be checked frequently to prevent accidents from happening. Here are some important factors to consider to ensure that your tyre is in the perfect condition for a road trip.

How to check tire balance

Ensuring that your tires are balanced is important as it helps to distribute weight evenly around the entire circumference of the tire which helps to prevent premature wear of car parts and uncomfortable vibrations when driving. Here are some tips on how to check if your tires are balanced:

  1. A delay in steering wheel response time or veering of tires to left or right may indicate unbalanced tires

  2. Higher fuel consumption as a result of resistance is also an indicator of tire imbalance

  3. Uneven tire wear is one of the most distinctive signs of unbalanced tires

  4. Wear and tear of springs, shocks, bearings and other components may be a sign of tire imbalance as it causes the vehicle to work under immense pressure

How to check tire alignment

Proper wheel alignment is necessary to avoid premature wear on tyres, steering, suspension and brakes as well as optimizes driving stability, maximizes tyre life and improves handling performance. Here are some tips on how to check tire alignment:

  1. You can inspect your car’s alignment using a measuring tape and a level. The distance between the front and rear centerlines of the tires should be equal. You may also place a level on top of the tires to check for vertical alignment

  2. The tire may not be aligned if there is more wear and tear on one side of the tire as compared to the other

  3. Scraping, whining or grinding sounds may indicate that the tire has been misaligned

How to check tyre pressure

It is important to ensure that your tyre pressure is optimum as this helps to maximize tyre life, quicker steering response, better fuel efficiency and better vehicle performance. Here are some tips on how to check tyre pressure:

  1. You may use a digital or standard tyre pressure gauge. This can easily be purchased in workshops or found at petrol stations.

  2. You may check your tyres’ recommended PSI by looking at the PSI stated by the side door.

7. How to check car battery health

The car battery is the most vital component of a car. Without it, cars are unable to function. As like any other components, a car battery will need to be changed occasionally, between two to five years, depending on the usage.

  1. Check the battery electrolyte level to ensure that it is at least three quarter of the whole battery cell

  2. Ensure that the battery terminal connecting the car’s electronic system to the car battery is tight and clean as loose terminals will cause a buildup of green salts

  3. It may be time to change the car battery if the car takes longer than usual to start

  4. Requiring jump-start assistance especially during cooler temperatures indicate that a change in car battery may be needed

  5. A bloated or swollen looking car battery indicates that a new car battery is needed

  6. An acidic smell emitting from the car battery when the bonnet is opened is a sign to change to car battery

Mazda EZ-6 and Mazda Arata EVs unveiled at Auto China 2024 https://www.carlist.my/news/mazda-ez-6-and-mazda-arata-evs-unveiled-at-auto-china-2024-136493/136493/ https://www.carlist.my/news/mazda-ez-6-and-mazda-arata-evs-unveiled-at-auto-china-2024-136493/136493/ Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Mazda has kicked off its participation at Auto China 2024 by unveiling two all-new electrified models, the Mazda EZ-6 and the Mazda Arata.

The Mazda EZ-6 will begin its deployment into the Chinese market at the end of 2024 replacing the current Mazda 6 followed by the Arata sometime in 2025 as it is now still in the design concept model phase.

2024 mazda ez-6 ev phev specs features

According to Masahiro Moro, President & CEO of Mazda, "We are delighted to introduce the all-new new energy vehicle (NEV) developed in alliance with Mazda and Changan Automobile. The Mazda EZ-6 is the latest electrified vehicle that combines Mazda's strengths with Changan Automobile's electrified technology. Going forward, Mazda will continue to work with Changan Automobile to turn Mazda’s China business around by introducing its unique products that meet the needs of Chinese customers who prefer advanced vehicles."

2024 mazda ez-6 ev phev specs features

Just like all Mazda models, the EZ-6 carries the brand's signature 'KODO-Soul of Motion' design language together with the Jinba-Ittai driving prowess. Transporting these elements over to the Mazda EZ-6 is crucial considering that it'll be available in two versions - a fully-electrified EV and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV).

2024 mazda ez-6 ev phev specs features

There's no official news on the powertrains just yet, but it'll most likely follow the Deepal SL03, a model and brand local to China between the partnership of Mazda and its partner, Changan. With that being said, the EV variant of the EZ-6 will most likely have either 218PS or 258PS with 320Nm of torque.

2024 mazda ez-6 ev phev specs features

Battery packs will be either the 58.9kWh with a range of 530km or a slightly bigger 66.8kWh unit that can go up to 610km (CLTC rated). As for the PHEV version, the electric motor will be paired with a 1.5-litre inline-four engine with more or less the same figures and a maximum range of 1,140km in hybrid mode (EV mode 134km-200km depending on battery size).

2024 mazda arata concept ev phev specs features

As for the Mazda Arata concept, there's a chance that it might just replace the Mazda CX-5 in the Chinese market if it follows the same steps as the Mazda EZ-6. Using the “Uplifting the Human Spirit" philosophy, this crossover SUV is designed to appeal to the 'advanced, sophisticated taste of Chinese consumers'.

It was also mentioned that the production version of the Mazda Arata will also be available in two different powertrains - EV and PHEV just like the Mazda EZ-6. More information will be available as we move closer to 2025, including the official prices for the Mazda EZ-6.

There are also three different rim sizes to choose from ranging between 21-23 inches paired with a lovely set of Pirelli P Zero tyres and Scorpion Winter 2 rubbers for those planning to drive during the cold season.

As for pricing, you may estimate somewhere far north of RM1 million before including all of the duties, taxes, and options.

For those who are interested, the Tesla Model 3 Performance is priced from RM242,000 and that's not including the RM1,000 booking fee. For that asking price, you'll get a Tesla Model 3 with the new Performance Drive Unit - two electric motors that can generate 460hp.

That's enough to propel from 0-100km/h in just 3.1 seconds before arriving to its top speed of 262km/h. With that extra power, the range is slightly sacrificed to 528km (WLTP), which is still a respectable figure compared to the Model 3 Long Range's 629km.

2024 tesla model 3 performance price specs malaysia

Despite costing RM24,000 more than the Long Range variant, the Tesla Model 3 Performance makes up for it with a bunch of added goodies like a bespoke performance design with a carbon fibre spoiler, new adaptive suspension, performance brakes and chassis, 20-inch forged performance wheels, and carbon fibre details just to name a few.

There's also the addition of Track Mode V3 - a new calibration feature for the powertrain and adaptive suspension that allows the user to customise things like handling balance, stability controls, and regen braking to your liking.

If you fancy other exterior colours apart from the base (and free) Pearl White Multi-Coat, then you'll need to add RM7,500 to RM11,000 to the asking price. The same goes for the black/white interior (RM5,000), Enhanced Autopilot (RM16,000), and Full Self-Driving Capability (RM32,000) which will also feature Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control Autosteer on city streets.

Tesla Malaysia also stated on their official website that the new Tesla Model 3 Performance will begin deliveries in Q2 2024.

2024 GAC GS3 Emzoom launched in Malaysia - New B-segment SUV from RM118,900 https://www.carlist.my/news/2024-gac-gs3-emzoom-launched-in-malaysia-ckd-b-segment-suv-from-rm118-900-136400/136400/ https://www.carlist.my/news/2024-gac-gs3-emzoom-launched-in-malaysia-ckd-b-segment-suv-from-rm118-900-136400/136400/ Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Warisan Tan Chong Automotive (WCTA) has just launched the all-new GAC GS3 Emzoom priced from RM118,900 and available across two variants, a highly anticipated and long awaited second model and successor to the previous-generation GS3 that first arrived here in in the closing days of 2021. Local assembly is set to commence later this year, so these prices are for its fully imported (CBU) guise.

  • 2024 GAC GS3 Emzoom Exclusive - RM118,900
  • 2024 GAC GS3 Emzoom Premium R - RM128,900

Clearly WTCA has taken their time with this release, ensuring that the vehicle was fully tested and adapted for Malaysian roads and conditions as well as sorting out CKD operations so that each GS3 Emzoom rolls out locally assembled from their facility in Segambut.

This B-segment SUV locks horns with some obvious rivals, chief of which is the Proton X50. However, aside from the longstanding class heavyweights such as the Honda HR-V, the GS3 Emzoom has to also contend with a very sharply priced Omoda 5 from fellow China-based automaker Chery.

Available in Ivory White, Starlight Silver, Salt Lake Blue, and Graphene Grey, the colour selection satisfy a decent spectrum of tastes even if the styling proves a little divisive. We can quite decide if this or the Omoda 5 wins in terms of attracting attention on the road, especially in their most eye catching colours and accents. Mind you, the R-style bodykit is exclusive to the Premium R.

The GS3 Emzoom showcases quite a sleek exterior design that’s leagues more contemporary than the outgoing GS3, but by no shortage of angular shapes and lines. Built on the GAC Motor’s GPMA platform, the GS3 Emzoom measures 4,410mm long and 1,850mm wide, with a 2,650mm wheelbase, marking increases over its predecessor.

On dimensions alone, the GS3 Emzoom is shaping out as the larger vehicle, boasting a 20mm longer wheelbase and 20mm advantage in overall width against the Omoda 5. In our very brief time spent inside the car at the launch event, however, this size difference is tough to notice.

However, against the X50, that extra size works out to 80mm more in overall length, 50mm wider, and a 50mm longer wheelbase.

Equipped with 18-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels in a satin black finish and wearing 225/55 tyres on the Premium R variant, mechanically similar to the Exclusive variant but distinguished by its front and rear bumper extension kit.

It’s anime-like aesthetic is reflected in that front grille, which GAC are calling Mecha Wing. Flaking it are a pair of ‘Laser Eye’ split-LED headlamps, and ‘Light Dart’ tail lamps. Adding a touch of elegance, the GS3 Emzoom includes flush-fitting exterior door handles, possibly making it the most affordable vehicle with this feature.

Under the hood, the GS3 Emzoom houses a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine generating 177 PS at 5,500 rpm and 270 Nm of torque from 1,400 rpm. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, with a claimed fuel consumption of 5.9-litres per 100 km, according to GAC.

Stepping inside, the cabin does feel high tech and fairly high quality relative to its asking price. While its ergonomics and upfront tech features are par for the course (dual driver’s and infotainment touchscreens, for example), the most distinguishing element here are the dual tone blue/black leatherette upholstery and trim. This cabin colour combo is uniform across all variants and body colour options, but only seems to match the Salt Lake Blue.

A 10.25-inch screen is perched at the centre with all the usual features. However, while Apple Carplay comes as standard, connectivity for Android users is relegated to Bluetooth or screen mirroring. There’s also a wireless phone charger, ambient interior lighting, and a panoramic sunroof, but only on the Premium R.

Active safety (ADAS) is equipped as standard, as it should be, and the suite includes Autonomous Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, and Adaptive Cruise Control. There’s also a 360-degree surround view camera. Only the Premium R gets High Beam Assist and something called Fusion Automatic Parking Assist (FAPA).

For early customers of the GS3 Emzoom (first 2,000), WTCA are offering a Special Launch Package that includes a 3x complimentary scheduled servicing inclusive of labour, parts, and lubricants.

Additionally, they will also receive an extended warranty of 7-years (or 180,000km) on the engine and powertrain over the standard 5-years (or 150,000km) warranty. Early birds will also receive a limited GAC Smart Watch Key.

2024 Mazda CX-80 three-row crossover SUV launched in Europe https://www.carlist.my/news/2024-mazda-cx-80-three-row-crossover-suv-launched-in-europe-136411/136411/ https://www.carlist.my/news/2024-mazda-cx-80-three-row-crossover-suv-launched-in-europe-136411/136411/ Carlist.my Mazda Motor Europe has launched its first-ever crossover SUV for its market, the 2024 Mazda CX-80.

With pre-sales starting in May, the 2024 Mazda CX-80 is the fourth model from the brand's Large Product Group following the footsteps of the Mazda CX-60, CX-90, and CX-70.

Offering 'Mazda's human-centric philosophy and excellent environmental and safety performance', the CX-80 will be leading the European product line-up as the flagship model available in two different hybrid powertrains with an all-electric driving range of up to 60km.

The two electrified powertrains come in the form of a 2.5-litre inline-four petrol engine plug-in hybrid called e-Skyactiv PHEV and another 3.3-litre inline-six diesel unit paired with the M Hybrid Boost called the e-Skyactiv D.

Despite the variations in powertrains, the Mazda CX-80 is developed as a 'Graceful Driving SUV'. The iconic Jinba-Ittai element of 'car and driver as one' has also been heavily inspired for this three-row SUV to offer a powerful driving experience paired with high safety features as well as meeting the latest regulations.

2024 mazda cx-80 features three-row suv europe

As for design concept, Mazda went for 'Graceful Toughness' for the latest CX-80 to provide an SUV that is elegant yet tough both inside and out. Future owners can expect a much bigger sense of space with the cabin with three different options for the second-row seats - captain seats with a centre console, captain seats without a centre console, and the good ol' bench seats for three.

Mazda also stated that even with the third-row seats in use, there's still enough cargo space at the back for things like a golf bag or a baby stroller and even more so when the third and second-row seats are folded.

Safety-wise is further elevated with the inclusion of Cruising & Traffic Support (CTS) with Unresponsive Driver Support - the first adoption for Mazda in the European market.

When CTS is active, the system will alert the driver if it detects the driver not paying attention to the road ahead while driving (things like closing one eye or looking away).

If the driver doesn't remedy the situation when it comes to things like careless driving or sudden illness, the system will then assist in decelerating and stopping the vehicle to avoid any unwanted accidents.

GWM’s Haval H6 facelift debuts for 2024, but will Malaysia have to wait long to enjoy it? https://www.carlist.my/news/gwm-s-haval-h6-facelift-debuts-for-2024-but-will-malaysia-have-to-wait-long-to-enjoy-it-136387/136387/ https://www.carlist.my/news/gwm-s-haval-h6-facelift-debuts-for-2024-but-will-malaysia-have-to-wait-long-to-enjoy-it-136387/136387/ Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my GWM has unveiled updates to the Haval H6 in China, but there's still uncertainty surrounding if this updated version will be gracing Malaysian launch and how long might we have to wait for H6 in this latest and greatest guise.

Though GWM Malaysia has outright confirmed that the H6 will finally be making its market entrance here in Q2 2024, we are most likely to see the pre-facelift that has been rolling around Thailand for some time. Those who remember the H6’s appearance at a certain motor show around this time in 2023 should know what to expect.

The refreshed Haval H6 for China showcases a redesigned front with vertical LED daytime running lights that puts in mind of the Hyundai Palisade. Meanwhile, the rear now features separate tail light clusters instead of the full-width LED light bar that featured prominently before.

Unfortunately, the SUV’s interior details remain undisclosed officially. Though we don’t expect many alterations over the pre-facelift’s cabin and instruments, leaked images suggest a larger infotainment touchscreen are among the changes.

While the refreshed model of the car maintains the engines from the 2023 Haval H6, they've undergone enhancements. The 1.5L turbo unit now delivers 176PS of power while the 2.0T version has similarly seen a power bump from 210PS to 230PS. Both engines are paired to a 7-speed wet-type dual-clutch transmission.

No details yet on the enhancements made to the hybrid and PHEV variants in terms of their powertrain, though that announcement, as well as more thorough details about its interior, should be forthcoming shortly.

It's anticipated that the current Haval H6 will be succeeded by the new Haval Xiaolong Max, a global SUV offering plug-in hybrid power, either late in 2024 or early in 2025. Still, it’s possible that GWM Malaysia would launch the current-generation H6 in this facelift guise first.

Though the electrified versions of the current H6 boasts some impressive specifications such as lithium ion batteries large enough to rival BEVs (up to 45kWh in the case of the PHEV), the H6 is very like to be introduced in hybrid (non-plug-in) form.

Working in similar fashion to Honda’s i-MMD system, the H6 Hybrid is equipped with a 1.5-litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine generating 150PS and 230 Nm of torque, assisted by a rather powerful 177PS and 300 Nm electric motor running in a series-parallel configuration, resulting in a combined system output of 243 PS and 530 Nm of torque.

In terms of raw performance, it shouldn’t have much trouble against its closest segment rivals such as the Proton X70, Honda CR-V, and Mazda CX-5.

The aforementioned Haval Xiaolong Max that we reckon is set to replace the H6 more heavily emphasises plug-in hybrid power and was first showcased at the 2023 Shanghai Motor Show.

It boasts advanced features such as a "smart system" for adaptive driving modes, Intelligent Torque Vectoring Control, and energy recuperation capabilities. Interior amenities include digital displays, advanced infotainment, and a suite of driver assistance features.

2024 Alfa Romeo Milano, their first EV, renamed Junior because Italy complained https://www.carlist.my/news/alfa-romeo-unveils-the-milano-its-first-ev-that-italy-itself-says-might-be-illegal-136339/136339/ https://www.carlist.my/news/alfa-romeo-unveils-the-milano-its-first-ev-that-italy-itself-says-might-be-illegal-136339/136339/ Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my "MILANO NAME IS NOT OKAY? JUNIOR THEN!" were the words that titled Alfa Romeo's latest press release following the Italian government's assertion that the name of its newest model, the Milano, was in violation of the law due to its production in Poland.

Adolfo Urso, Italy’s minister of industry, made the claim that Stellantis’ use of the famous city’s name makes the outsourcing of the car’s production beyond its borders illegal.

“This law stipulates that you cannot give indications that mislead consumers. So a car called Milano must be produced in Italy. Otherwise, it gives a misleading indication which is not allowed under Italian law,” said Urso in remarks reported by Reuters.

It was a quick reaction from Stellantis and Alfa Romeo, leading us to suspect that they had anticipated this, but we won't argue whether or not Junior is a better name. It definitely isn't as cool, though.

What is the Alfa Romeo Milano Junior?

Alfa Romeo has pulled the covers off the Milano (as of late last week), its latest crossover model and the third in its lineup, aiming to fill the void left by the discontinued MiTo and Giulietta hatchbacks. Importantly, it’s the Italian brand’s first fully electric vehicle.

In terms of its positioning, however, what is possibly Alfa’s most disruptive (or it is divisive?) new model in quite some time isn’t slotted at the top of the range. Rather, it sits at the lower rung of their SUV line-up, below the Stelvio and Tonale.

The Milano's Junior's design, although somewhat expected due to prior leaks, departs from Alfa Romeo's recent aesthetic. Featuring a wider and shorter shield grille compared to previous models, the Milano Junior showcases classic Alfa Romeo script on petrol variants and a shadowy rendition of the brand's logo on electric models.

Drawing inspiration from the Giulia TZ (apparently), its tail lights and rear design exude a sporty vibe, complemented by a black roof, distinctive wheels, and a bold front end reminiscent of Alfa Romeo's heritage. Overall, as a design langauge, it's top notch.

This vehicle marks the brand's shift towards electric propulsion and is possibly the final new Alfa model be offered with a combustion engine of any description, with plans previously announced  to exclusively offer electric vehicles by 2027. Unsurprisingly, longtime fans of Alfa Romeo aren’t too enthusiastic about this.

In Europe, the Milano Junior offers three drivetrains: the hybrid Ibrida, the electric Elettrica, and the performance-oriented Elettrica Veloce. The Ibrida combines a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 48V lithium-ion battery and electric motor for a total output of 134PS, with an option for all-wheel drive in the future.

On the other hand, the Elettrica kicks off the Milano Junior in pure electric flavour with a 156PS electric motor for a range of 410km under WLTP standards. Meanwhile, the Elettrica Veloce ups the ante with a more powerful 240PS electric motor, unique suspension, and more aggressive design elements that echoing the Abarth 600e. Both electric variants share a 54kWh battery and can be charged via AC (11kW max) and DC (100kW max) sources.

There will be another ‘hybrid’ variant added into the mix but next to zero details have been confirmed beyond this.

While a local launch is far from likely, parent company Stellantis’ full entry into Malaysia recently means nothing can be ruled out. After all, they have already outlined an ambitious plan beyond merely the reinvigoration of the Peugeot marque.

Apart from Europe, the Milano Junior is scheduled for release in Australia in 2025 alongside the Jeep Avenger and Peugeot e-2008, its e-CMP2 platform siblings, possibly signalling a crucial stepping stone as Alfa Romeo creeps further into the Asia Pacific region.

Differentiating itself within its segment, the Milano Junior boasts the "most direct steering," promising to honour the dynamic driving experience that Alfas were synonymous with. Despite being the smallest model in their stable, it surpasses the dimensions of the previous MiTo.

Inside, the Milano Junior adopts Alfa Romeo's signature dual-cowl instrument binnacle and offers a touchscreen infotainment system angled towards the driver. Sporty seats, faux suede trim, and ample storage space complete the interior. While pricing remains undisclosed, Alfa Romeo's CEO suggests a broad price range for the Milano Junior, affirming the brand's versatility in catering to various markets.

The order books for the Alfa Romeo Milano Junior are due to open in Q3 2024 with units rolling off the Stellantis plant in Tychy, Poland, the source of all this naming controversy.

Setting off with the proper tyre pressures is important not only for safety but also for fuel economy, and the inclusion of an electronic Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) makes that a breeze on the Chery.

When up to highway speed, however, the Tiggo 8 Pro’s Adaptive Cruise Control and Integrated Cruise Assist as well as Traffic Jam Assist can help take some of the burden off the driver.

The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro may not carry the hefty price tag of luxury SUVs, but it delivers a comparable level of comfort, convenience, and performance. In essence, the Tiggo 8 Pro embodies accessible luxury, very much making it a worthy contender in its class.

Bookings now open for the double award-winning Kia EV9 in Malaysia https://www.carlist.my/news/bookings-now-open-for-the-double-award-winning-kia-ev9-for-malaysia-136262/136262/ https://www.carlist.my/news/bookings-now-open-for-the-double-award-winning-kia-ev9-for-malaysia-136262/136262/ Carlist.my The KIA EV9 is now open for booking as Dinamikjaya Motors, the Korean marque’s official Malaysian distributor, has announced. This piece of news follows the EV9’s double wins at the 2024 World Car Awards ceremony.

Held following the conclusion of the New York Motor Show on April 7th, the World Car Awards winners were selected by selected by a jury of 100 automotive journalists from 29 countries. There, the EV9 bagged the coveted World Car of the Year and World Electric Vehicle titles.

With the EV9 soon to be added as another fully electric feather in Bermaz’s cap, it will be joining previous award winner, the EV6, as well as the Niro EV in the local line-up. We’ll have more on this as its official launch date approaches, so stay tuned.

So far, not much is known about the EV9 in its Malaysian specification. Like the EV6 currently sold here and with which it shares the E-GMP platform, the EV9 could emerge as a single variant (GT-Line) model just as it is offered in Singapore.

There, it’s equipped with a ‘Long Range’ 99.8kWh lithium ion polymer battery and dual electric motors for all-wheel drive and a combined output of 385PS and 700Nm. That’s enough to shoot the 2.6 tonne EV9 to 100km/h in 5.3 seconds while range is estimated at 647km (NEDC).

We’re a little murky on pricing. Of course, given its position at the top of KIA’s fully electric pecking order, the EV9 will naturally land north of the EV6’s price tag of RM319k. In Thailand, the EV9 in GT-Line trim is sold for 3,899,000 Baht (around RM505k).

Identical to the locally sold EV6, however, the EV9 should be equally offered with a 5-years (or 150,000km) vehicle warranty and an 8-years (or 160,000km) battery warranty.

In terms of the competitive landscape in Malaysia, the EV9 shouldn’t have too many rivals to worry about as the majority of automakers are focused on smaller electric models.

The only large SUVs that fall into this ‘zero emissions’ category would be the BMW iX and Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, though both of those only offer 2-rows of seating as opposed to the EV9’s 3-rows.

No, you can't buy the Tesla Cybertruck in Malaysia, here's why https://www.carlist.my/news/no-you-can-t-buy-the-tesla-cybertruck-in-malaysia-here-s-why-136248/136248/ https://www.carlist.my/news/no-you-can-t-buy-the-tesla-cybertruck-in-malaysia-here-s-why-136248/136248/ Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my The Tesla Cybertruck has just showed up in Malaysia, marking its second appearance in the ASEAN region after Thailand and its third (at least) in a right-hand drive market in Asia.

Of course, the model displayed in this preview isn't tailored to local specifications; it remains a left-hand drive (LHD) version imported directly from the Gigafactory in Austin, Texas. Clearly, however, the EV maker is taking the prospect of a right-hand drive version seriously given this world tour.

However, it will first embark on a nationwide tour. Given that Malaysia only has two Tesla ‘Stores’ as of the time of writing, we suspect the company has got some dedicated locations/events to show it off, so stay tuned for that.

The showcased variant here is the dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD), which sits in the middle of the Cybertruck range as it stands right now. Below this there will be a less expensive single-motor variant, though that’s only due out in 2025.

At the top of the heap, a very angular stainless steel heap, is the Cyberbeast variant that features a tri-motor setup akin to the Model S Plaid with a pretty ludicrous 857PS and 13,959Nm on tap.

Nevertheless, this mid-pack unit brought is no pushover, boasting a still-excessive 608 PS and a remarkable 10,080 Nm of torque, powered by a 123 kWh lithium-ion battery. The quoted range stands at 547km, expandable up to approximately 755 km with an optional range extender, although not equipped in this specific unit.

One of the standout features is the Cybertruck's 'exoskeleton', a body constructed from a blend of different metals dubbed 'Hard Freaking Stainless' by Tesla, purportedly capable of repelling bullets and arrows within certain limits, while also being resilient and corrosion-resistant, eliminating the need for paint.

With a minimum kerb weight exceeding 3 tonnes and sizing up at 5,683 mm in length, 2,032mm in width, and 1,796 mm in height, the Cybertruck surpasses the industry standard HiLux by 358mm in length and 132mm in width, with an impressive wheelbase of 3,635 mm that’s a staggering 550 mm longer than the Toyota.

The Cybertruck also showcases a new 48V architecture throughout and employing a Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) network internally to manage various functions like sensors and lighting, significantly reducing the need for wiring compared to conventional vehicles, a first for production vehicles.

Charging is facilitated by an 800V system capable of reaching charging speeds of 250kW on a sufficiently rapid DC charger or Tesla’s own-brand Supercharger, allowing for a recovery of 219 km of range in just 15 minutes.

Internally, the Cybertruck follows Tesla's signature starkly minimal design, highlighted by a large 18.5-inch static touchscreen at the center stack for accessing vehicle functions and information. It accommodates five passengers, with those in the rear benefiting from a 9.4-inch touchscreen.
Additional features include a 15-speaker setup with two dedicated subwoofers, a HEPA filter, 65W USB-C chargers, 240V outlets, and wireless phone chargers.

The Cybertruck previewed in Malaysia is a limited-run, early-access Foundation Series model, offering certain perks over the standard version, such as all-weather interior liners, a center console tray, glass roof sunshade, and Full-Self Driving (FSD) capability, alongside distinctive badges.

While American customers receive a bundled charging plan and expedited delivery schedule, the Cybertruck won't be available for sale in Malaysia anytime soon. Aside from the obvious left-hand drive issue, it’s hard to know if it’s even receive certification in this part of the world given its size and controversial body shape that might pose a risk of extra injury to pedestrians.

We’re cool enough for the Cybertruck, Tesla Malaysia confirms via new teaser https://www.carlist.my/news/we-re-cool-enough-for-the-cybertruck-tesla-malaysia-confirms-via-new-teaser-136222/136222/ https://www.carlist.my/news/we-re-cool-enough-for-the-cybertruck-tesla-malaysia-confirms-via-new-teaser-136222/136222/ Carlist.my Yes, it’s pretty much official: the Tesla Cybertruck is here in Malaysia. Or so the story goes. At the very least it will be here, uncovered, very soon with Tesla Malaysia teasing their ‘HFS’ stainless steel-bodied off-road-able EV on their social media accounts.

Interestingly, the teaser video they posted is the same one that cropped up a few days prior when the Cybertruck was announced to be making its ASEAN debut (appearance, not launch) in Bangkok starting this weekend, leading us to believe its next stop could be Malaysia.

As far as its market entrance goes, it’s hard to even speculate as there’s plenty of in-between work to do before that can happen - localisation and/or safety testing, for example, not to mention the concluded development of a right-hand drive version.

It was reported back in late 2023 that Tesla’s Gigafactory in Texas, currently the only location where the Cybertrucks are rolling out from, are focusing entirely on left-hand drive units. That said, it’s clear that Tesla sees plenty of demand in both Thailand and Malaysia, enough to preview it in the flesh and gauge the public’s response.

In early February, Tesla took a Cybertruck (a left-hand drive example, notably) out of North America for the first time for its first Asian appearance in Japan. While its quite likely that the unit being shown off in Bangkok and Malaysia will be of a similar spec, we’re open to being pleasantly surprised.

In the US, customers have the option to pre-order the entry single-motor (RWD) variant boasting an advertised range of 402km, although this particular configuration won't be available until 2025.

For variants available for the 2024 model year, the Cybertruck is offered with a dual-motors (608PS, 10,081Nm) powered by a 123kW battery, providing a range of 547km. Meanwhile, the tri-motor Cyberbeast variant boosts power to 857PS and 13,959Nm while slightly reducing range to 515km. And yes, those are 5-figure torque outputs.

Pricing references will be based on US-spec models, which starts at USD 60,990 (approximately RM285k) for the RWD variant due in 2025, USD 79,990 (around RM347k) for the AWD variant, and USD 99,990 (RM467k) for the Cyberbeast option.

BYD to launch new PHEV pickup truck soon to rival Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger https://www.carlist.my/news/byd-to-launch-new-phev-pickup-truck-soon-to-rival-toyota-hilux-and-ford-ranger-136214/136214/ https://www.carlist.my/news/byd-to-launch-new-phev-pickup-truck-soon-to-rival-toyota-hilux-and-ford-ranger-136214/136214/ Carlist.my BYD has been on a role in the EV market and despite a slight setback in sales (and losing the best-selling EV brand title to Tesla), there's no sign of them slowing things down.

In fact, they're gunning for an entirely new segment - pickup trucks. BYD has teased us with a bunch of photos of a heavily camouflaged blue/orange pickup truck and BYD themselves have confirmed that this will be made available for several markets globally.

byd phev pickup truck 2024 bao leopard 5

Judging by the looks, this pickup truck should have slightly bigger dimensions than most medium to large-sized pickup truck models like the Toyota Hilux as it will most likely be based on the Bao Leopard 5 by Fang Cheng Bao (or Formula Bao), one of the sub-brands under the BYD umbrella.

With that being said, it is also said that this BYD pickup truck will also share the same powertrain as the Bao Leopard 5 - a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine mated to electric motors (one on each axle) with a combined power output of 687PS and 760Nm of torque.

byd phev pickup truck 2024 bao leopard 5

Fitted with a 31.8kWh Blade battery from BYD, the Bao Leopard 5 can travel up to 125km in all-electric mode or up to 1,200km when you consider the petrol engine into the equation.

And yes, it can be charged as it supports up to 100kW of DC fast charging which translates to just 16 minutes to get it juiced up from 10% to 80%.

byd phev pickup truck 2024 bao leopard 5

Going back to the news of the BYD pickup truck being intended for the global market, it won't be surprising if they have Thailand and Australia in their sights.

Since these two are right-hand-drive markets, perhaps it might also make its way into Malaysia as well? Or perhaps they'll wait it out and just launch a fully electric version that is also said to be unveiled next year?

Stay tuned for more updates.

stellantis malaysia peugeot jeep leapmotor citroen 2024

Yesterday's Iftar event with members of the media saw presentation slides that piqued our interest. Titled "Reviving Iconic Brands in Malaysia", there were four brands listed below it (one of them being Peugeot marked under 'Upper Mainstream', of course).

stellantis malaysia peugeot jeep leapmotor citroen 2024

On top of that list marked under 'Recreational Lifestyle' is Jeep. It's not exactly a new brand but Stellantis Malaysia will reintroduce the brand into the local market this year.

No news on specific models yet, but if we look at our neighbours in Thailand, they're currently selling the Gladiator Rubicon, Wrangler Rubicon, and the new Grand Cherokee PHEV.

stellantis malaysia peugeot jeep leapmotor citroen 2024

Next up on the list labelled 'Affordable EV' is Leapmotor, which will also see its first official Malaysian debut in 2024. We're not entirely sure what or how they meant by 'affordable', but Leapmotor has three core models starting with the compact T03, C01 sedan, and perhaps the nicest-looking out of the trio, the C11 SUV.

stellantis malaysia peugeot jeep leapmotor citroen 2024

Last but not least, another brand that will see another round is Citroen. Positioned by Stellantis Malaysia as a brand under the 'Mass Market' flag with an entire plethora of SUVs big and small for ICEs to EVs.

One thing is for sure, we're definitely excited to see the future of all these brands under the Stellantis Malaysia umbrella. Stay tuned for more details.

2024 Peugeot 408 1.6T launching at Malaysia Auto Show this May, to fight Honda Civic & Mazda 3 https://www.carlist.my/news/2024-peugeot-408-to-launch-in-may-new-dynamic-fastback-to-bother-the-mazda-3-honda-civic-136207/136207/ https://www.carlist.my/news/2024-peugeot-408-to-launch-in-may-new-dynamic-fastback-to-bother-the-mazda-3-honda-civic-136207/136207/ Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my With Peugeot now being out from under the care of Bermaz, parent company Stellantis sees the French brand as a pivotal catalyst in the broader group official rollout into the Malaysian market. And it starts with the all-new 408, slated to launch in Q2 of 2024.

Even while Peugeot was under different distributorship, news of the 408’s arrival and localisation process would crop up from time to time. Stellantis Malaysia shares the optimism about the model, and has fast-tracked its local assembly for that second quarter launch window, specifically some time in May.

We can’t really point to a car that it definitely competes against, but its classification into the C-segment would technically mean it locking horns with the Honda Civic and Mazda 3, though the 408 does defy convention in terms of its styling and design.

Peugeot themselves term the car as a ‘Dynamic Fastback’. A quick glance at the car will probably tell you it’s quite a handsome thing, if unconventional, sporting cues from a sedan (its side silhouette), a hatchback (its roof-hinged tailgate), and a crossover (its black lower perimeter cladding and slight raised ground clearance of 189mm).

In terms of pricing, it’s clear that Peugeot has been making an upmarket push and therefore could likely be positioned higher than the Civic, so keep that in consideration when contrasting this against the previous generation 408 launched here.

Malaysia is actually quite late to the party in ASEAN, with the car having already been launched in multiple neighbouring countries. Unlike the PHEV-only range sold in Thailand, the Malaysian spread will more closely follow its Vietnam spec, and there’s good reason to believe the car will be offered here, as it is there, in 3 variants: Allure, Premium, and GT.

All are expected to be powered by the same engine, namely a 1.6-litre PureTech turbocharged four-cylinder petrol with 218PS and 300Nm mated to an 8-speed automatic driving the front wheels.

In Vietnam, the 408 starts at 1,019,000,000 VND (or around RM193k) for the base Allure, 1,119,000,000 VND (or ~RM212k) for the mid-tier Premium, and 1,269,000,000 VND (or ~RM241k) for the range-topping GT.

At those prices, the Peugeot 408 range will come (dangerously?) close to cars, albeit smaller ones, from German marques such as the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, which kicks off at RM219k. The Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan launched at the end of 2023, meanwhile, are at RM239k. Just food for thought.

Of course, it won’t be a 1-to-1 currency swap when it does arrive next month, and there are plenty of things we’re not aware of that Stellantis are doing to make the 408’s price as attractive as possible to Malaysians.

Equipment levels are fairly high with the Allure coming fitted with 18-inch alloys, LED headlights, leather interior upholstery, combination 10-inch digital instrument cluster and 10-inch infotainment touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and a suite of active safety features.

For the additional outlay, the GT receives goodies such as Matrix LED headlights, 20-inch wheels, Nappa leather trim, a 360-degree surround view camera system, and a premium 10-speaker sound system from Focal.

Of course, we’ll have more coverage of the 408 as it draws closer to that official launch. Stay tuned!

2024 ORA 07 launched in Malaysia - 2 variants from RM169k - Up to 640km range, 408PS https://www.carlist.my/news/2024-ora-07-launched-in-malaysia-2-variants-from-rm-up-to-640km-range-408ps-136183/136183/ https://www.carlist.my/news/2024-ora-07-launched-in-malaysia-2-variants-from-rm-up-to-640km-range-408ps-136183/136183/ Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my After its preview in mid-March, less than a month ago, GWM has now officially introduced its second ORA model in Malaysia, named the 07. The sleek four-dour coupe comes in two variants, Long Range Ultra and Performance, priced between RM169,800 and RM189,800.

The 07 joins the smaller, more urban-oriented Good Cat in GWM's electric lineup. With its earlier debut in Thailand, we had anticipated a fair bit of consistency in specifications, which was ultimately true.

Sizing up at 4,871mm in length, 1,862mm in width, and 1,500mm in height, the 07 competes directly with sleek, sporty four-door EV sedans like the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Seal, though GWM’s aggressive pricing means that the 07 undercuts them significantly.

That said, time will tell if this was a bold enough move to sway customers away from its more established rivals into the ORA fold.

Built on GWM’s Lemon E platform, the 07 draws clear inspiration from the first-generation Porsche Panamera, the 07 boasts a stylish and swept back exterior design, though ORA's aesthetic may not appeal to everyone.

Three exterior colours will be offered, at least initially: Crystal Purple, Amethyst Gray and Jade White. Visually, the main differentiator are the wheels: the Long Range Ultra receives 18-inch alloys while the Performance rides on a set of 19-inchers with a distinctly more ‘blingtastic’ design and finish.

However, its aerodynamic shape has lead it to an impressively low drag coefficient of just 0.22, no doubt aiding its endurance over a single charge. Speaking of which, both the ORA 07 in Long Range Ultra and Performance guises are equipped with the same 83.5kWh ternary lithium battery.

The Long Range Ultra variant boasts a claimed range of 640km (on the NEDC testing cycle), boasting 204PS and 340Nm of torque from a single electric motor mounted at the front. By contrast, the equivalent Seal and Model 3 are rear-wheel drive (RWD).

On the other hand, the Performance variant boasts dual electric motors, delivering a combined output of 408PS and 680Nm spread across both axles for all-wheel drive (AWD). Despite a slightly reduced range of 550km (on the same NEDC cycle), it accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 4.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 180km/h.

That’s 0.5s off the sprint time of the BYD Seal Performance and the more recently launched MG4 XPOWER, but still neck-achingly quick nonetheless. Notably, it should beat what is currently the quickest Tesla Model 3 officially sold here by a nose, as that advertises a 0-100km/h sprint of 4.4 seconds.

Petty drag races aside, the 07’s interior features a minimalist yet luxurious design, including a T-shaped dashboard, frameless windows, and a choice of black or brown synthetic leather upholstery, the latter colour is an RM2,500 optional upgrade. We’re particular fans of its triple binnacle gauge cluster that, while still digital (collectively measuring 10.25-inches), at least attempts to mimic the functional elegance of analogue dials.

The dashboard layout is, at least to our eyes, yet another nod to an iconic Porsche, but in this case the Carrera GT. There are a refreshing spread of physical buttons, too, as opposed to the overly minimal streak we’ve seen on so many other EVs. Build quality and finishing is also a notable upgrade over the ORA Good Cat, but that’s perhaps expected given the gulf in price.

Other cabin highlights include a large glass roof measuring 1.7 metres squared, dual zone climate control, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a 50W wireless smartphone charger, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a premium 11-speaker sound system from Infinity, along with a comprehensive array of active safety features.

Both the Long Range Ultra and Performance variants of the ORA 07 are equipped with a bevy of driver-aids and active safety features that GWM claim it capable of Level 2 autonomous driving, including Front Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Parking, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Braking, Integrated Intelligent Parking, and Adaptive Cruise Control with intelligent cornering and Traffic Jam Assist.

In addition to the standard manufacturer's warranty of 6 years (or 150,000km), each ORA 07 comes with 5 years of complimentary maintenance and an 8-year (or 180,000km) battery warranty. As we start seeing it arrive in showrooms nationwide, it's intriguing to consider how it will fare against competitors from BYD and Tesla.

Additionally, GWM will offer a 1-to-1 battery replacement should its State of Charge (SoC) fall below 70%. There’s also a 12 year rust and corrosion warranty. You’re free to make of that what you will.

Alongside all this, the first 500 ORA 07 customers will receive a complimentary home wallbox charger as well as an extra 2-years added to the warranty (making it 8-years or 180,000km).

Right-hand drive Tesla Cybertruck heads to Bangkok this week - Malaysian launch within reach? https://www.carlist.my/news/right-hand-drive-tesla-cybertruck-heads-to-bangkok-this-week-malaysian-launch-within-reach-136171/136171/ https://www.carlist.my/news/right-hand-drive-tesla-cybertruck-heads-to-bangkok-this-week-malaysian-launch-within-reach-136171/136171/ Carlist.my The Tesla Cybertruck is apparently set to make its ASEAN debut in the Land of Smiles some time this month, with the pick-up truck loving country set to welcome the BEV on display in Bangkok.

Specifically, it’ll be shown off at Tesla Centre Ramkhamhaeng from April 6th, and in right-hand drive guise no less, starting on the penultimate day of the very much EV-charged Bangkok International Motor Show.

No doubt Tesla are interested in gauging response in Thailand, though very little else about their intention is known. In terms of specification, we can only surmise it will closely mirror the Cybertruck available in the US.

There, customers can choose either a single-motor (RWD) option with an advertised range of 402km, though this variant won’t be ready until 2025.

For the 2024 model year, the Cybertruck is available with a dual-motors (608PS, 10,081Nm - yes, that much torque) fed from a 123kW battery with 547km of range. The tri-motor Cyberbeast variant, however takes that to 857PS and 13,959Nm but reduces range to 515km.

We’ll also have to lean on the US pricing for any reference to how dearly it might be sold for when it does make its official Thai debut. The range kicks of at USD 60,990 (around RM285k) for the RWD variant, USD 79,990 (around RM347k) for the AWD variant, and USD 99,990 (RM467k) for the Cyberbeast option.

Fans of Tesla, geometry, and stainless steel should be happy to learn of this development, especially as it was teased on X by the company itself, but this certainly bodes well for the Malaysian market too, as it does increase the chances of it making its way down here as well, especially as Tesla faces increased competition from newcomers to the market.

Just like Tesla Thailand, you might also have noticed that the Cybertruck page is now live on Tesla Malaysia’s website, though all you’re able to do there is register you interest and wait for updates.

News of a potential right-hand drive Cybertruck had been quite murky in the past months with Australia receiving conflicting reports of its arrival despite widespread public interest.

We’d say the odds are in our favour, especially given that Tesla’s range is Thailand has been swiftly mirrored here in Malaysia.

Raya 2024: Federal roads speed limit dropped to 80km/h, 8-14 April https://www.carlist.my/news/raya-2024-federal-roads-speed-limit-dropped-to-80km-h-8-14-april-136166/136166/ https://www.carlist.my/news/raya-2024-federal-roads-speed-limit-dropped-to-80km-h-8-14-april-136166/136166/ Carlist.my Hari Raya Aidilfitri is just around the corner and the federal roads' speed limit nationwide will be lowered to 80km/h, just like how it was implemented during this year's Chinese New Year.

This has been officially announced by the Works Ministry (KKR) which will see the speed limit for all federal roads across Malaysia to be dropped by 10km/h between 8-14 April 2024.

If you're used to driving at 90km/h, be aware of your vehicle's speed for these seven days in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri and lift off slightly to cruise at 80km/h instead.

federal road speed limit raya 2024 malaysia

What's the purpose of lowering the speed limit? Amongst other things, it's part of the government's efforts to not only increase safety amongst all road users during this very busy period of travel, but also to hopefully reduce the number of road accidents.

In other efforts to ensure safer and smoother travels during Hari Raya, all maintenance works and non-critical construction will be suspended from 5-14 April 2024, including lane closures (except for emergencies, pothole repairs, and critical maintenance works).

Selamat Hari Raya in advance and have a safe journey ahead!

Mileage Tampering: What Is It And How You Can Avoid It When Buying A Used Car? https://www.carlist.my/news/mileage-tampering-what-is-it-and-how-you-can-avoid-it-when-buying-a-used-car-136092/136092/ https://www.carlist.my/news/mileage-tampering-what-is-it-and-how-you-can-avoid-it-when-buying-a-used-car-136092/136092/ Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my In the realm of prospective vehicle ownership, especially when looking in the used market, the issue of mileage tampering remains a significant concern. So, what is it, and how can you mitigate your chances of falling prey to it?

Mileage tampering, commonly referred to as "clocking" or "rollback," involves altering the odometer reading of a vehicle to display a lower mileage than the actual distance travelled. As you can imagine, the motivations behind this are deceitful.

Sellers may engage in mileage tampering to inflate the resale value of their vehicles, deceive prospective buyers regarding the vehicle's condition, or evade penalties associated with lease agreements.

Unfortunately, Malaysia could do better to have stricter laws to deter would-be perpetrators, as is the case in many other countries where individuals who knowingly engage in mileage tampering are likely to swiftly face legal consequences.

That said, educating consumers about the risks associated with mileage tampering is crucial in fostering transparency and accountability within the automotive industry, and with that, here are some simple ways you can prevent being duped into buying a car with a “rolled-back” mileage reading.

1. Check service history.

A vehicle’s up-to-date service history is one of the most important things to check when selecting a used car, so it should be one of your first things to ask about from the seller. Feel free to look at any and all the relevant maintenance and repair documentation as well.

New cars under manufacturer warranty will require it to undergo routine maintenance at an authorised dealer or official appointed service centres, with mileage and work done clearly logged. Most owners also keep these receipts, which further reinforces the credibility of the car’s mileage. If the numbers don’t match, that’s definitely a red flag.

2. Does its condition match the mileage?

The saying “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is” applies strongly to buying used or reconditioned cars. Take your time to inspect the overall exterior and interior condition of the vehicle. If it doesn't match the expected condition given its mileage and history, further investigation is strongly recommended.

Signs of tampering include scuff marks around the gauge cluster, newer-looking gauges or odometers, and non-functional or faulty operation of the trip computer/odometer. Other than that, be sure to check the thickness of brake discs and the car’s tyre condition, as discrepancies may indicate mileage rollback. A low-mileage vehicle, for example, is likely to still be fitted with its factory tyres.

3. Have the car inspected by a trusted mechanic.

Mechanics possess the expertise to identify subtle signs of tampering that ordinary buyers might miss. Their technical knowledge allows them to thoroughly examine the vehicle's mechanical components, detecting any inconsistencies between the odometer reading and the actual condition of the car.

Additionally, mechanics have access to diagnostic tools and equipment that can reveal electronic tampering or manipulation of the odometer. Their presence during the early viewing process provides buyers with peace of mind and professional guidance, ensuring they make an informed decision about the purchase.

Should you not be able to bring a mechanic with you to help you with the viewing, you could make a request to the seller that the car be brought to an independent mechanic for a more thorough inspection. How the seller responds to this, especially if you already suspect the car’s mileage being tampered with, should inform you of their motives.

A Quality Used Car, Every Time

We, as car buyers, have to remain vigilant when undertaking the purchase of something as important and financially significant as a car, especially when you know there are unscrupulous individuals out there that may have you paying way above the worth of the car.

But why not skip the headache and uncertainty altogether?

All CARSOME Certified cars go through a strict 175-point inspection to rule out mileage tampering, major accident, flood, and fire damage. Additionally, they all come with fixed prices with no hidden fees, and a hassle-free purchase experience where we’ll handle all the documents for you.

2024 Xiaomi SU7 EV debuts, Porsche Taycan rival for 1/4 the price, 830km range  https://www.carlist.my/news/2024-xiaomi-su7-ev-debuts-porsche-taycan-rival-for-1-4-the-price-830km-range-136095/136095/ https://www.carlist.my/news/2024-xiaomi-su7-ev-debuts-porsche-taycan-rival-for-1-4-the-price-830km-range-136095/136095/ Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Xiaomi has officially launched its much-anticipated SU7 sedan in Beijing yesterday, marking a significant leap into the electric vehicle market from a brand that we associate most of all with smartphones and consumer electronics.

With prices ranging from 215,900 to 299,900 Yuan (approximately RM142k to RM196k) and scheduled deliveries set to commence by the end of April, the Xiaomi SU7 is offered over 3 variants positioned to both undercut and outperform the venerable Tesla Model 3.

Sure, this all does sound a little familiar, but what novel tactics does Xiaomi bring to their newfound EV offensive?

Ambitious Industry Benchmarking

They’ve certainly been ambitious with their choice of adversary, especially given its the company’s first foray into EVs. Several prominent ‘Model 3 killers’ have spawned in the wake of the American EV maker’s entry-level sedan release such as the BYD Seal, Nio ET5, Xpeng P7, and the ORA 07 to name a few.

Yesterday's launch event was hosted by Xiaomi co-founder Lei Jun who openly expects the SU7 to match the Porsche Taycan Turbo S in its most performance-oriented variant. He also acknowledged that, at these prices, each car would be sold at a loss (Tesla’s Model 3 starts at 245,900 yuan or roughly RM161k in China).

Adding a measure of prestige to the occasion was former BMW Group Chief of Design, Chris Bangle, who took the stage to commend the SU7, the development of which he was involved with as a consultant to Xiaomi Auto Design, and endorsing its suitability for European markets.

Impressive Specification

The SU7 is manufactured in Beijing by BAIC, a state-owned automaker and the country’s 6th-largest. Three powertrain variants will be offered, catering to different preferences and driving requirements. Kicking things off is the SU7 Standard featuring BYD's LFP Blade battery with a capacity of 73.6 kWh. The top-tier Max Performance version, meanwhile, is equipped with a 101 kWh CATL Qilin battery.

The SU7 also boasts advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), offering two distinct options: Xiaomi Pilot Pro and Xiaomi Pilot Max. These systems leverage Nvidia Drive Orin chips with up to 508 teraflops of compute power to enhance safety and performance on the road. Additionally, the sedan supports Apple CarPlay and native iPad connectivity and accessory support.

Inside, the SU7 looks modern and minimal, quite typical of the many EVs currently out there. There are ample storage solutions, including some interesting inbuilt compartments for laptops, smartphones, and even refrigerators. The vehicle's roomy interior, coupled with its Modena platform, ensures a refined experience while on the move.

Human x Car x Home

With the launch of the SU7, Xiaomi is shifting to what it calls the ”Human x Car x Home" smart ecosystem, with a strong emphasis expectedly on automobiles and their integration into the lives of their owners.

Co-founder Lei Jun declared the completion of this ecosystem with the addition of the Xiaomi EV, saying it facilitates collaboration and among individuals, devices, and services, with over 200 product categories seamlessly integrated across platforms and operating systems, delivering personalised intelligence through Xiaomi HyperMind's AI capabilities.

Collaborating with industry partners, Xiaomi aims to make its ecosystem more inclusive and human-centered. Lei Jun sees Xiaomi's entry into the automotive industry as a significant milestone, reflecting deep investment in core technologies and signaling the company's evolution in intelligent manufacturing. He envisions Xiaomi EVs becoming commonplace worldwide, marking a new era for Xiaomi.

Deliveries of the Standard and Max versions slated to begin in late April 2024, followed by the Pro version by the end of May. No word yet about when a wider global will begin, but our fingers are crossed that Malaysia isn't too far down that list.

Toll-free travel on all highways for Hari Raya 2024 https://www.carlist.my/news/toll-free-travel-on-all-highways-for-hari-raya-2024-136093/136093/ https://www.carlist.my/news/toll-free-travel-on-all-highways-for-hari-raya-2024-136093/136093/ Carlist.my In conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri which is just around the corner, the Works Ministry has announced that there will be toll-free travel on all highways from 8-9 April 2024.

This toll-free exemption applies to all Class 1 vehicles (private vehicles) which will start from 12.01 am on 8 April 2024 to 11.59 pm on 9 April 2024.

This applies to all toll plazas except at two locations - Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) and Tanjung Kupang, Johor.

free highway toll hari raya 2024

According to Works Minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, "This decision was made during the Cabinet meeting on Feb 7, aimed at celebrating all citizens, especially the Islamic community, who celebrate Aidilfitri, and as a gesture of care and shared joy with all Malaysians."

It is also expected that the number of vehicles will increase to 2.46 million per day during this toll-free travel period. To avoid massive congestion, fellow motorists are also advised to follow the travel time advisory (TTA) schedule.

Another tactic that will be deployed to fight against congestion is the activation of Smart Lanes at 18 different locations on the PLUS Highway. Hopefully, all highway users including motorcyclists can be aware of the new Smart Lane locations this Hari Raya.

This was confirmed during the press conference following the launch of the MG4 and MG ZS EV yesterday where SAIC Motor Malaysia Managing Director, Steven Du, said the Cyberster’s wider global rollout is very much contingent on the concluded development of a right-hand drive version, which he expects by Q3 2024.

Concurrent with that statement, the car had also been gracing the eyes of attendees at the ongoing Bangkok International Motor Show, in right-hand drive guise too. Word on the ground there suggests a price of THB 2,499,000 (around RM324k) when it does launch by the end of the year.

With that in mind, it should be the perfect halo model to sit alongside the aforementioned ZS EV and MG4, assuming SAIC doesn’t have yet more models to surprise us with by then.

What is the MG Cyberster?

The Cyberster is a convertible sports car, but like many new MG models, this one eschews combustion power in favour of a BEV powertrain. It draws from the brand’s history as one of the champions of the classic ‘British roadster’ formula of a compact, lightweight, and open top two-seaters such as the MGA and MGB.

Here in 2024, the launch of any two-door enthusiast/fun-focused new car of any description is a rare encounter, and even seemingly nonexistent in an EV space that’s dominated by crossovers, so it’s refreshing to see MG blazing their own trail by looking to its past.

Sure, the Cyberster’s long bonnet and ground-hugging body are classic cues for a convertible sports car while its signature red colour does evoke the people’s favourite Mazda MX-5, often seen as the spiritual successor to those British roadsters of old. That said, it’s powered scissor doors and 1,850kg kerb weight are elements that run counter to its British roadster roots.

Interestingly enough, that estimated Thai price tag, if accurate, would see the Cyberster undercutting its closest market rival, the MX-5 RF 2.0 with a 6-speed manual, by around 14 percent due to lower import and excise duties levied by the government there in favour of electric vehicles.

With dimensions of 4,535 mm in length, 1,913 mm in width, and 1,329mm in height, along with a wheelbase of 2,690 mm, the MG is also decidedly larger than the Mazda.

While the Cyberster offers three variants and output options in China, Thailand is exclusively offering the top-tier version that features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration with 544 PS and 725 Nm of torque, allowing acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and reaching a top speed of 200 km/h.

Powering the electric motors is a 77 kWh battery, delivering a NEDC-rated range of 503 km on a single charge. It’s quoted at 11 hours while on MG home charger for AC charging while DC fast charging achieves a 10 to 80% charge in about 26 minutes at a maximum rate of 140 kW.

Externally, the Cyberster is equipped with features such as a soft-top canvas roof, automatic LED headlights, LED DRLs and tail lights, and 20-inch alloys fitted with 245/40 front and 275/35 rear profile tyres.

Inside, it boasts a triple-screen digital display panel, comprised of a 10.25-inch screen flanked by two seven-inch screens, along with Y-shape sports seats upholstered in Nappa leather and Alcantara.

Other interior highlights include six-way powered driver/passenger seats, soft-touch elements, 64-color ambient lighting, a Bose sound system, dual-zone air-conditioning, a PM 2.5 air filter system, electronic parking brake, and connectivity options like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Regarding safety, the Cyberster is equipped with various electronic assistance features including traction, stability, and braking systems, along with a 3D around view camera system and a suite of driver assistance technologies.

These include lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, lane change assist, forward collision warning, AEB braking, adaptive cruise control with low-speed automatic cruise control, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and braking intervention.

Gen Z’s first electric sports car?

Young car enthusiasts (Gen Z?) might be more inclined to toward BEVs than those of us who grew up around combustion engines, but they haven’t had much to point to as an aspirational sports car that’s at least somewhat attainable.

Of course, there is also the second generation Tesla Roadster, but delay after delay has our excitement dampened since it was first announced all the way back in 2017.

There are outliers at the very high end such as the Rimac Nevera and a few cars coming down the pipe to fully explore the performance potential of EVs, but the majority of fast zero emissions cars are merely ‘performance’ variants of existing models of four-door sedans or SUVs.

The Cyberster bucks that trend and introduces us to a familiar two-seat roadster that’s designed from the ground up to be a sports car, impracticalities and all. We just have to get used its corny name.

2024 XPeng G6 launched in Thailand, coming to Malaysia in Q3? https://www.carlist.my/news/2024-xpeng-g6-launched-in-thailand-coming-to-malaysia-in-q3-136053/136053/ https://www.carlist.my/news/2024-xpeng-g6-launched-in-thailand-coming-to-malaysia-in-q3-136053/136053/ Carlist.my XPeng Thailand has announced that the 2024 XPeng G6 EV SUV is now open for booking in their local market.

Officially unveiled at the 2024 Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS), the G6 is the brand's first-ever right-hand-drive production model that'll make its way into other ASEAN countries, including Malaysia.

2024 xpeng g6 ev suv thailand launch bangkok motor show

Earlier this month, it was announced that Bermaz Auto Bhd will be the official distributor for the XPeng brand here in Malaysia. While there's no specific timeline regarding the arrival of the XPeng G6 into Malaysia, we can expect it somewhere within Q3 of 2024.

To put things into perspective, the XPeng G6 has somewhat similar dimensions to the Tesla Model Y with a slightly taller height. Its overall dimensions stand at 4,753mm long, 1,920mm wide, and 1,650mm tall thanks to the brand's SEPA 2.0 platform.

This 800V architecture also means that the XPeng G6 can support up to 280kW of DC fast charging, which means that 10-80% SoC can be completed in just 20 minutes.

0-100km/h can be completed in 6.6 seconds for the Standard Range and 5.9 seconds for the Long Range despite having similar power outputs as well as the 202km/h limited top speed.

Last but not least, the pricing. There's no official figure as of yet but some reports have indicated that the 2024 XPeng G6 EV SUV will be between 1.5-1.8 million Baht, which is roughly around RM195k to RM234k.

How cheaper it'll be once the G6 enters Malaysia, we will only know for sure in the coming months. Stay tuned for more updates.

2024 MG4 launched in Malaysia starting from RM104k, XPOWER mega hatch at RM160k https://www.carlist.my/news/2024-mg4-launched-in-malaysia-starting-from-rm104k-xpower-mega-hatch-at-rm160k-136052/136052/ https://www.carlist.my/news/2024-mg4-launched-in-malaysia-starting-from-rm104k-xpower-mega-hatch-at-rm160k-136052/136052/ Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my With the launch of the MG4, SAIC Motor Malaysia has wasted no time in launching their full range of one of their most successful new EVs, with a total of four variants that start from just RM103,999.

Perhaps most excitingly, at the other end of MG4 spectrum we have the XPOWER, an all-wheel driven dual-motor electric mega-hatch that boasts power, torque and acceleration to rival the BYD Seal Performance, but priced much lower at RM158,999.

  • MG4 Standard - RM103,999
  • MG4 Lux - RM128,999
  • MG4 Lux Extended Range - RM148,999
  • MG4 XPOWER - RM158,999

The MG4 presents a distinct offering by being just by virtue of being a hatchback in a market saturated with similarly sized EVs calling themselves crossovers, boasting distinctive design elements that set it apart from its counterparts.

This EV's distinctive appearance can also be attributed to its relatively low roofline, a feature uncommon in electric cars. This design choice, enabled by a particularly slim battery, contributes to a more dynamic aesthetic. MG claims a balanced weight distribution of 50:50, coupled with rear-wheel drive, promising an engaging driving experience reminiscent of BMW vehicles.

With sharp, angular features and a grille-less front, the MG4 establishes its unique aesthetic, departing from the conventional styling cues of the MG lineup. The rear of the MG4 is equally attention-grabbing, featuring a rising beltline leading to full-width wraparound rear lights and a prominent rear spoiler, creating a visually striking profile. All variants ride on 18-inch two-tone alloy wheels, though the XPOWER receives a sportier set as well as considerably larger brakes.

Inside, the MG4 boasts a clean and minimalist dashboard design, highlighted by a full-width vent strip and a squared-off steering wheel. A notable feature is the 10.25-inch landscape touchscreen display, complemented by physical buttons for added convenience. Connectivity options include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ensuring seamless integration with smartphones.

The MG4 lineup comprises three variants, each equipped with a single rear motor and battery configuration. Starting with the Standard variant, priced at an estimated RM104k, it offers a 170 PS motor paired with a 51 kWh LFP battery, providing a range of 350 km in the WLTP cycle.

Moving up the range, the Lux variant, priced at RM129k, boasts a more powerful motor and a larger NMC battery, delivering 203 PS and extending the range to 435 km. Finally, the Lux Extended Range variant, priced at RM149k, offers enhanced performance and range, courtesy of a 245 PS motor and a 77 kWh NMC battery, providing a range of 520 km.

Charging capabilities include AC charging at a maximum rate of 11 kW, enabling a full charge in eight hours, while DC fast charging at 150 kW allows for rapid replenishment, with a 30% to 80% state of charge achieved in 26 minutes. Notably, the MG4 offers V2L functionality at 6 kW, facilitating the powering of external appliances.

In terms of equipment, standard features on the MG4 include automatic LED projector headlamps, LED daytime running lights, automatic climate control, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Safety features encompass six airbags, rear Isofix child seat mounts, and the MG Pilot safety pack, among others.

Opting for the Lux variant adds additional features such as reflective technology for the LED headlamps, a 360-degree camera, wireless phone charger, and leather upholstery, among others. The Lux Extended Range variant offers increased performance and range without additional equipment enhancements.
In summary, the MG4 represents a compelling option in the electric hatchback segment, combining distinctive design, advanced technology, and impressive performance in a package that offers excellent value for money.

2024 MG ZS EV launched in Malaysia - SAIC’s debut B-segment SUV for RM125,999 https://www.carlist.my/news/2024-mg-zs-ev-launched-in-malaysia-saic-s-debut-b-segment-suv-for-rm125-999-136050/136050/ https://www.carlist.my/news/2024-mg-zs-ev-launched-in-malaysia-saic-s-debut-b-segment-suv-for-rm125-999-136050/136050/ Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Meet the newest fully electric B-segment SUV here to tempt Malaysian buyers, the MG ZS EV, which is now available in a single variant priced at RM125,999.

It’s been a whirlwind so far as SAIC Motor Malaysia has very swiftly gone from a public preview to a full market debut of their range of cars, starting with the formerly British brand MG and the ZS EV. Talks of MG's return to Malaysia have circulated since 2013, finally materialising now.

To give you some context about its size, this MG is slightly shorter (by 62 mm) but wider (by 19 mm) compared to the Honda HR-V, measuring 4,323 mm in length and 1,809 mm in width with a wheelbase of 2,585 mm. The ZS boasts a boot volume of 448 litres, expandable to 1,187 litres with the rear seats folded in a 60:40 configuration.

The ZS EV, although not a new model, has received a 2022 facelift that features a grille-less front end and a repositioned charging port, now located on the right side beneath the MG badge. Notable exterior enhancements include a larger trapezoidal centre air intake, split into two sections by a new front spoiler design, and slim corner air inlets.

Additionally, new projector LED headlights with arrow-shaped daytime running lights contribute to its modern aesthetic. At the rear, the ZS mirrors the front's lamp design and incorporates a revised bumper with increased body colour usage, along with newly designed 17-inch turbine-style alloy wheels.

On the EV-spec front, 2022 facelift also brings an upgraded 51.1 kWh LFP battery (previously 44.5 kWh), providing a WLTP-rated range of 320 km. Paired with a front motor delivering 176 PS and 280 Nm of torque, the ZS EV accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in a respectable 8.0 seconds. The vehicle offers three driving modes – Eco, Normal, and Sport – along with three levels of energy regeneration in MG's KERS system.

Safety features include the MG Pilot ADAS suite, comprising autonomous emergency braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, and high-beam assist. Additionally, the ZS EV is equipped with a 360-degree camera system and ISOFIX child seat mounts.

Exterior colour options include Dynamic Red, Monument Silver, Black Pearl, and Arctic White. Notably, SAIC Motor Malaysia displayed a white variant despite other more dynamic colour options available. Warranty coverage spans seven years or 150,000 km for the vehicle and eight years or 180,000 km for the EV battery.

Priced at RM126k, the MG ZS EV offers a competitive edge by undercutting rivals such as the BYD Atto 3 Standard Range (RM149k) and the Chery Omoda E5 (RM146k), albeit with a shorter range.

While seasoned enthusiasts may recall this English brand from yesteryears, others might reminisce about the fleeting presence of MG Rover cars in Malaysia. Under their stewardship, SAIC is eager to leverage MG's century-old legacy, and has been successful in winning over the buying public in many markets including Thailand where its presence has been long-established.

Though steeped in history, MG's lineup reflects modernity, especially in Malaysia, where it will exclusively offer electric vehicles, unlike its presence in other ASEAN markets. The MG ZS, for example, is typically available in both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric variants elsewhere. However, given SAIC Motor Malaysia’s EV-only strategy for Malaysia, at least for now, its debut models the ZS offered exclusively in its fully electric guise.

SAIC Motor Malaysia are offering the MG ZS EV with a 7-year or 150,000km warranty (whichever comes first) as well as an 8-year or 180,000km (whichever comes first) battery warranty. Additionally, they are also providing MG customers with a 1-to-1 battery exchange program should the battery’s state-of-health dips below 70% during the battery warranty coverage period.

2024 ORA Good Cat price cut now from RM113k, best value EV vs. BYD Dolphin & Neta V? https://www.carlist.my/news/gwm-slahes-good-cat-prices-by-rm26k-how-does-it-stack-up-against-other-evs-under-rm150k-136002/136002/ https://www.carlist.my/news/gwm-slahes-good-cat-prices-by-rm26k-how-does-it-stack-up-against-other-evs-under-rm150k-136002/136002/ Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my GWM has recently announced a significant price reduction of RM26,000 across the entire ORA Good Cat range, positioning the electric hatchback more competitively in the market. The revised prices start at RM113,800 (previously RM139,800) for the base 400 Pro model and escalate to RM143,800 for the 500 Ultra (previously RM169,800).

For those on the fence about EV ownership in Malaysia and the Good Cat in particular, the price adjustment is startling: the 400 Pro now stands RM16,000 below the 2023 BYD Atto 3 Standard Range, while the 500 Pro carries a RM3,000 advantage over the Omoda E5 (factoring in the latter’s inclusive on-the-road costs at RM146,800). It's worth noting that GWM’s discounts extend to the latest 2024 model year car only.

To sweeten the deal even more, there’s also an extended warranty, stretching from the existing 5 years to 7 years (with the same 150,000 km mileage cap), accompanied by 5 years of complimentary service added while warranty for the battery and motor remains unchanged at 8 years or 180,000 km.

Additionally, GWM is offering a promotion until April 30th which would include a complimentary AC wallbox charger and three-pin portable charger for all new buyers of the Good Cat (soon to be renamed the ORA 03?).

Things are definitely getting more heated in the entry-to-mid level playing field for EVs offered in Malaysia, an area where GWM with the ORA Good Cat was one of the first to enter. It’s quite clear that this dramatic price reduction was motivated by pressure from the competition, namely other electric car brands from China such as BYD, Chery, and the imminent rollout of MG.

Though above the RM150,000 mark, buyers also have plenty of choice from entrants such as Tesla and smart, the sub-RM150k and sub-RM120k will make the most impact in terms of swaying a broader spectrum of Malaysians into EV adoption.

Here’s how some of the cars stack up against each other on paper.

As we can see, the ORA Good Cat undercuts both the Chery Omoda 5 and BYD Atto 3 Standard Range, offering the lowest outlay for an EV of this size at a starting price of just RM113,800.

That said, there are other areas where its rivals come out ahead, such as the matter of power and torque where the Good Cat is clearly the least endowed in terms of raw output from its single electric motor. We found performance to not be an issue during our time testing it, but this will depends on your needs.

It’s AC and DC charging speeds aren’t especially fast, either, with the Omoda E5 and BYD Atto 3 boasting the fastest support for rapid charging.

All told, the ORA Good Cat is still the familiar EV we’ve known since its late 2022 launch and remains competitive from a purely spec-for-spec perspective, but with the drop in price across the range, the value calculous is altered dramatically.

What we are left wondering is, will we see similarly aggressive tactics from other automakers? For example, BYD did react quite quickly to the introduction of the Chery Omoda E5, offering their Atto 3 for a promotional price of RM129,800 for the Standard Range variant (2023 model year only), putting in very close proximity to the smaller Dolphin Premium Extended at RM125,730.

Below the RM120,000 mark we have the most attainably priced EVs currently on sale, a slice of the market that's set to welcome the MG4, a new entrant with an estimated price of just RM104k along with an impressive specification.

To put things into perspective, the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro will slot itself nicely between the Chery Omoda 5 and its bigger sibling with third-row seats, the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro.

Just like the two, the Tiggo 7 Pro will also see itself participating in the local assembly program in Kulim, Kedah. With ROIs now open, we can expect to see its official launch sometime within Q2 of this year.

Top reasons why the MINI Countryman JCW Trim should be your next SAV https://www.carlist.my/news/top-reasons-why-the-mini-countryman-jcw-trim-should-be-your-next-sav-135972/135972/ https://www.carlist.my/news/top-reasons-why-the-mini-countryman-jcw-trim-should-be-your-next-sav-135972/135972/ Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my To all you MINIacs and enthusiasts here in the country, the MINI Cooper S Countryman is celebrating yet another major milestone since its Malaysian debut 13 years ago with an exclusive special edition of the Cooper S Countryman.

As the F60 generation MINI Countryman prepares for a last hurrah, it's poised to enchant Malaysians with a graceful final waltz in the limited-edition JCW Trim.

It's been quite a journey for the MINI Countryman since its first introduction back in 2011. MINIacs around the world were drawn by their versatility and practicality while retaining all the fun factors that MINIs are well-loved for.

The first-generation R60 MINI Countryman arrived in our local market in 2011. Then came the second-generation F60 in 2017. A facelifted model was introduced in 2021 with updated safety features, better tech and sharper looks. This Cooper S Countryman JCW Trim is the final hurrah for the F60 in Malaysia.

Limited to just 168 units, here are the top reasons why the MINI Cooper S Countryman JCW Trim should be your next Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), apart from being one of only 168 owners here in the country.

1) Sporty JCW trim without breaking the bank

It goes with saying that if you're a MINI fan, there's no doubt that the John Cooper Works (JCW) models are high up on your list of 'dream cars to own'.

If you fancy the full-blown JCW version of the Countryman, it'll cost you close to RM390,000 to own one. However, if style is a priority and you want to save a bit of money for more exciting road trips in the future, then the MINI Countryman JCW Trim should be a no-brainer.

Thanks to addition of the JCW trim, any fellow MINIac will have their heads turned in awe and those who are new to the MINI Countryman will display the same level of ecstatic interest to know more about it and all of its JCW goodies.

For those who are fortunate enough to tag along for the ride can experience its premium interior features such as anthracite pillars and sun visors, plus super comfortable seats in the brand's most spacious and adventure-ready vehicle offering yet.

The already iconic MINI Cooper Countryman in its standard form is already a head-turner in any crowd with a very reasonable asking price of RM250,388. It’s already a winner in the hearts of MINIacs around the world, but those who want a sportier facade can get it with the JCW trim priced at RM253,833.

That extra RM3,445 will get you a number of additions to make the MINI Countryman look ever sportier such as:

  • John Cooper Works (JCW) aerodynamic kit (front apron with built-in air ducts + rear bumper with JCW diffuser)
  • MINI JCW door sill finishers
  • Sporty JCW rear spoiler
  • 19-inch JCW Circuit Spoke Wheels

2) MINI's iconic comfort

Despite the sportier exterior facade, the MINI Countryman JCW Trim does not forgo one of its main highlights that can be found within the cabin - premium comfort.

Not every car today offers seats that promote a healthy orthopaedic seating posture with ample lumbar support and plush materials so that you can travel far and wide without straining your back and accompanying muscles.

For the driver, even the 5.0-inch multifunctional instrument cluster has been meticulously designed to provide a sleek yet minimalist appearance for useful information to be projected yet not distracting to your exhilarating drives.

Travelling up to 5 can be easily done with premium comfort paired with 450 liters of boot capacity to ferry all of your cargo along the trip. Trust us when we say that your entire family will adore MINI Countryman JCW Trim.

Need more space for trips to places like Ikea or a surfing holiday to Cherating? Simply fold the rear seats to get 1,000 litres of storage while carrying two other passengers.

If it's just the two of you seated upfront, then the MINI Countryman JCW Trim's storage prowess is further elevated to 1,390 litres. That'll bring a lot more fun to your shopping holiday and drive up to places like Bangkok, Thailand.

3) Versatile yet exciting driving

Your everyday drives can be easily conquered with the MINI Countryman JCW Trim. Thanks to its dynamic yet powerful 2-litre MINI TwinPower Turbo engine, you can have all sorts of fun with 192hp and 280Nm of torque on tap.

Mated to a seven-speed Dual Clutch Sports Automatic Transmission, it can do 0-100km/h in just 7.5 seconds before swiftly arriving to its top speed of 226km/h.

Ferrying the kids to school and heading to work after? Do so in comfort and save fuel with the GREEN Driving Mode. Want some 'touge' action? Switch it up to SPORT mode and enjoy fast gear changes and MINI's iconic handling.

For those who are interested, the MINI Countryman JCW Trim is available in four different colour options - British Racing Green, Chilli Red, Nanuq White and Sage Green.

Priced at RM253,833, there's also the 'peace of mind' add-on in the form of the MINI Extended Warranty and Service Package for just RM10,400.

For those who prefer the more classic look of the MINI Cooper S Countryman priced from RM250,388, just head to the nearest MINI authorised centre to book one of your very own. Additionally, you may also visit MINI Malaysia’s official website for more information.

Whichever Countryman you prefer, you can be sure that you'll be dressed to impress when you are cruising down the street.

Book one or BUY NOW before it's too late!

What’s even more amazing is the fact that one of the two new models was designed specifically for our friends on two wheels. The specs, unsurprisingly, are quite fantastic coming from the DDPAI camp.

Starting with the all-new DDPAI N5 Dual this tiny powerhouse comes with Upgraded Parking Mode with Radar and AI for added layers of security and peace of mind.

ddpai n5 dual dash cam car ranger bike price malaysia

The front side runs a 4K UHD setup for an enhanced ‘immersive viewing experience’ paired with a 1080P rear camera with a 140-degree wide-view angle lens as well as NightVIS technology.

Security and assurance are further enhanced with AI Motion Detection and its D2Save (dual-memory) Emergency System 32GB internal + external support up to 512GB). The former can help to identify and record ‘repeated visitors’ to your car as well as other events that you might be glad to have video proof such as dings and scratches.

The latter comes in handy in auto-saving emergency recordings to the dash cam’s built-in eMMC storage if there’s any issue with the SD card. This also assures that the Support Radar Parking Mode always functions smoothly with minimal power usage.

The DDPAI N5 Dual also offers simple Bluetooth connectivity to your phone for ease of pairing and video viewing. For those who are interested, the DDPAI N5 dash cam is priced at RM449 and RM559 if you opt to take it together with the OBD hardwire and radar kit.

The next hot item on the list is the DDPAI Ranger professional riding camera, a dash cam specifically designed for bikers and motorcyclists.

Looking like a slightly longer and more advanced version of the GoPro Hero Session, the Ranger delivers ultra-high video recording quality and stability no matter if you’re riding day or night.

Being able to record videos in 4K, the DDPAI Ranger is built with a large sensor (GC8613) with an F1.8 aperture.

The Ranger also features D-Flow Stabilization and SenseReality 4.0. The former offers integrated horizon levelling and wide-angle distortion calibration for super-smooth videos. The latter further enhances the recordings with dynamic data effects.

  • Built-in 128GB high-speed eMMC storage
  • Weatherproof construction with drop-proof protection
  • Recording function while charging via ACC charging base or power bank

Isuzu unveils fully electric D-Max EV Concept, coming to 2024 Bangkok Motor Show https://www.carlist.my/news/isuzu-unveils-fully-electric-d-max-ev-concept-coming-to-2024-bangkok-motor-show-135946/135946/ https://www.carlist.my/news/isuzu-unveils-fully-electric-d-max-ev-concept-coming-to-2024-bangkok-motor-show-135946/135946/ Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Carlist.my Isuzu has recently unveiled a new concept, a D-Max EV, signalling the company's venture into the realm of battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Details remain scarce, but this all-electric pick-up truck is scheduled to make its public debut at the upcoming Bangkok International Motor Show later this month.

Characterised as being "developed to meet a broad range of commercial and passenger vehicle needs while retaining the tough underlying performance expected of pick-up trucks," the D-Max BEV marks new ground for the Japanese brand. Ironically, Toyota is the only seems to be on a similar track with their HiLux REVO BEV from 2022.

Isuzu, for its part, is calling this fully electric D-Max a concept in name only as it’s reported that the production iteration of the BEV pickup is slated for launch in select European markets, with Norway being the initial target in 2025.

Subsequent rollout plans encompass markets such as the United Kingdom, Australia, and of course Thailand, contingent upon both market demand and the advancement of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.

In terms of design, the D-Max BEV distinguishes itself from its diesel-powered counterpart through a series of unique styling cues. Its front grille features a predominantly closed-off design, complemented by enhanced black sections on the front apron. Notably, blue accents adorn the grille insert and headlamps, adding a touch of flair to the vehicle's aesthetic.

Underpinning the D-Max BEV's performance is the integration of components borrowed from the Elf EV, including the battery pack and management system incorporated into the midsection of the ladder-frame chassis. With a 66.9 kWh battery capacity boasting dual electric motors situated on each axle, the D-Max EV concept delivers a combined system output of 177 PS and 325 Nm. That said, the real question remains about its claimed range on a single charge.

Moreover, the D-Max BEV boasts full-time four-wheel drive functionality and achieves a top speed exceeding 130 km/h. Its towing capacity extends to 3.5 tonnes, while the vehicle remains capable of carrying a maximum payload of 1,000 kg. Isuzu's emphasis on both power and practicality underscores the D-Max BEV's suitability for a diverse range of applications.

Again, we’re expecting to hear much more about this fully electric Isuzu D-Max as it’s shown off to the public at the Bangkok International Motor Show happening at the end of March.

Up to RM300,000 in prizes to be won, just spend as little as RM40 at BHPetrol this March and April https://www.carlist.my/news/up-to-rm300-000-in-prizes-to-won-just-spend-as-little-as-rm40-at-bhpetrol-135943/135943/ https://www.carlist.my/news/up-to-rm300-000-in-prizes-to-won-just-spend-as-little-as-rm40-at-bhpetrol-135943/135943/ Carlist.my From 1st of March to April 30th, BHPetrol are giving all eCard members a chance to win up to RM300,000 in prizes, and best of all it’s so easy to put yourself in the running!

Quite aptly, the contest itself is called “Ka-Ching!” and it follows a very straightforward Buy & Win procedure, meaning you essentially only need to refuel your vehicle as you normally at BHPetrol and, with a little bit of luck, could end up taking home some incredible winnings.

There are 3 main prizes: RM5,000 in cash, 1-year worth of petrol vouchers from BHPetrol, or a RM3,000 HABIB voucher, respectively. Other monthly and consolation prizes, such a gold bullion from HABIB and RM1,000 in fuel vouchers, will also be given to 50 more winners.

This is assuming you’re a user of the BHPetrol eCard app, of course. So, if you haven’t yet downloaded it via the iOS App Store or Google Play, what are you waiting for?

Once you have the app installed and set your eCard account up, taking part is as easy as spending a minimum of RM40 on a single receipt at any BHPetrol fuel station. That could comprise of petrol or diesel as well as items from the BHPetromart (but not including tobacco products, TnG reloads, utilities payment, or money spent at the car wash).

If you’ve previously registered for the eCard app or have an existing BHPetrol physical card, you’re already a step ahead, and if you’ve already spent more than RM40 with BHPetrol from March 1st, you’re probably already in the running. Click here to find out more.

Is it worth paying RM11.6k for the Chery Malaysia's Extra Peace of Mind Package?  https://www.carlist.my/news/is-it-worth-paying-rm11-6k-for-the-chery-malaysia-s-extra-peace-of-mind-package-135904/135904/ https://www.carlist.my/news/is-it-worth-paying-rm11-6k-for-the-chery-malaysia-s-extra-peace-of-mind-package-135904/135904/ Carlist.my Chery Malaysia has unveiled the Extra Peace of Mind package tailored for new purchasers of the Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro. Priced at RM11,600, this optional add-on aims to ensure a worry-free ownership experience for the initial seven years.

This package encompasses the replacement of various scheduled maintenance components such as engine oil, oil filter, coolant, brake fluid, air filter, spark plug, oil washer, and transmission oil. The company asserts that customers could potentially save up to RM2,750 on servicing expenses over the span of seven years.

It's worth noting that this warranty can still be obtained separately for RM2,000 if the RM11,600 package inclusive of maintenance items isn't preferred.

Customers have the option to include the RM11,600 cost of the extra Extra Peace of Mind (PoM) package into their hire purchase repayments. To provide a clearer perspective, let's examine a comparative table showcasing monthly loan repayment amounts over 9, 7, 5, and 3 years, with and without the inclusion of the Peace of Mind package:

(Repayment figures calculated assuming a 10% deposit and a interest rate of 3.0%)

Chery Omoda 5 (H) - RM118,800

Loan Duration

With PoM package (+RM11.6k)

Without PoM package

9 years

RM 1,380.07

RM 1,257.30

7 years

RM 1,690.54

RM 1,540.16

5 years

RM 2,249.40

RM 2,049.30

3 years

RM 3,553.40

RM 3,237.30

Chery Tiggo 8 Pro - RM159,800

Loan Duration

With PoM package (+RM11.6k)

Without PoM package

9 years

RM 1,813.98

RM 1,691.22

7 years

RM 2,222.08

RM 2,071.69

5 years

RM 2,956.65

RM 2,756.55

3 years

RM 4,670.65

RM 4,354.55

Unlike the Extended Warranty package which merely extends the vehicle warranty, the Peace of Mind package does impact the cost of long term maintenance, promising to cover all servicing over a 7-year (or 84 month) period.

Following Chery’s breakdown of cost for routine periodic servicing, the initial calculation does make it seem like the PoM package is costlier over the long term, even compared to a buyer that only added Extended Warranty package.

Model

Servicing, 7 years (+ EWP)

PoM Package

Difference

Omoda 5

RM 9,444

RM 11,600

RM 2,155.40

Tiggo 8 Pro

RM 9,494

RM 11,600

RM 2,105.80

However, it’s important to note that the Peace of Mind package serves as a safeguard against inflation or price increases for labour and/or parts and fluids, ensuring that customers' investments retain their value over time.

Another benefit here is the ability to spread the cost of maintenance across the duration of your loan period with Chery guaranteeing the fulfilment of pre-paid service packages, further cementing their commitment to customer satisfaction.

JAECOO J7 goes on Klang Valley, Johor Bahru preview tour ahead of slated H1 2024 launch https://www.carlist.my/news/jaecoo-seeks-to-conquer-the-high-demand-in-malaysia-for-c-segment-suvs-starting-with-their-j7-135897/135897/ https://www.carlist.my/news/jaecoo-seeks-to-conquer-the-high-demand-in-malaysia-for-c-segment-suvs-starting-with-their-j7-135897/135897/ Carlist.my Though it’s launch is potentially weeks or months away, interested parties can experience the JAECOO J7 firsthand at the JAECOO Premiere Experience events held at various locations, including Desa Park City, Pavilion Bukit Jalil, One Utama, Mid Valley, and Paradigm Mall, on specified dates throughout 2024.

  • Desa Park City, K.L: 7th to 17th March 2024
  • Pavilion Bukit Jalil, K.L: 19th to 23rd March 2024
  • One Utama, P.J: 10th to 14th April 2024
  • Mid Valley, K.L: 25th to 28th April 2024
  • Paradigm Mall, JB: 15th to 19th May 2024

Back in January, the brand had previewed the J7 in an intimate chic setting, flaunting its elegant design and upmarket cabin with impressive equipment levels.

Clearly, JAECOO, with the backing of their parent company Chery, are banking on their C-segment contender, the J7, being a hit with customers. Currently, the vehicle is slated for an official launch within the first half of 2024.

Weeks following that first look, they demonstrated the vehicle’s hardiness and off-road capability at another event, showing customers and members how it stacks up against its chief rivals in the local sphere such as the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5.

That said, it is unclear if the brand will be fielding just one or multiple vehicles to serve such a market. It’s worth remembering that they had also brought the larger J8 to show off back in January. Also unclear is whether JAECOO are equally as optimistic about the SUV demand within the D-segment.

Also, the SUV-centric automotive brand has expressed interest in establishing a strong foothold in the lucrative C-segment corner of the market, particularly with regard to the Malaysian market.

In particular, they are eyeing buyers in a sector they believe to be “rapidly expanding”, looking to serve the country’s “growing urban elite with a taste for off-road adventure”.

Leo Chen, President of JAECOO Malaysia, expressed optimism about the brand's reception in Malaysia, stating: JAECOO is enjoying a lot of interest here in Malaysia. We believe that the JAECOO brand is very much in line with Malaysia’s emerging group of trailblazers who enjoy an active lifestyle and appreciate a vehicle that performs on any terrain with an impressive off-road driving experience. And this is exactly what we aim to deliver.”
